Mental Health Stigma

Mental Health Stigma

We often have preconceived ideas about emotional wellbeing and mental health.

The following videos will help to challenge our preconceptions.

Riots

Riots

RIOTS!

Riots are shocking events where normal social conventions and practices break down, often resulting in violence between people and the looting and destruction of property. They often occur when a group of people are in an extreme emotional state, dissatisfied or angry about a particular circumstance or event. The riot itself ensues when the herd-like nature of people in a like-minded situation takes on its own momentum. Take a look at this blog for an interesting analysis. HERE are some ideas relating to the ethics of whether the technology used in the riots for communications should be banned.

London: 2011

Both Huffington Post and the BBC have tried to tackle the psychology of rioting to see what it is that tips the balance from peaceful protest to violent and aggressive action.

Brixton: 1981

The BBC overview of the Brixton Riots can be found HERE.

Money & The Consumer Culture

There is a problem with our ‘Westernised’ lifestyle. Simply, that a society system which uses money as its primary function will always need to make more money. Therefore, regardless of what products and services we buy into, we will never be happy or contented because there’ll always need to be another new product or service to own! Click HERE to explore a booklet from Lifesquared on the problems with consumerism and how we can take steps to lessen its impact on our physical and mental wellbeing.
Addiction

Addiction

Amy Winehouse Foundation

“The Foundation’s work focuses on three core areas
1. To inform and educate young people about the effects of drug and alcohol misuse, as well as to support those seeking help for their problems and those needing on-going support in their recovery
2. To provide support for those most vulnerable, including those who are disadvantaged through circumstance or at high risk of substance misuse.
3. To support the personal development of disadvantaged young people through music.”

Dystopia

Dystopia

Dystopia

“An imagined place or state in which everything is unpleasant or bad, typically a totalitarian or environmentally degraded one. The opposite of utopia.” Although many ideas of dystopia are imagined and created, the song I Can’t Breathe is influenced by many of the ideas presented in dystopian literature and media that has made its way into our current way of life.

HERE is a list of highly rated films relating to dystopian ideas.

1984

George Orwell’s novel 1984 was the daddy of all dystopias.” Every move we make is monitored in some way, shape or form. HERE is an article likening the current surveillance-filled lives we lead to Orwell’s 1984. One relating to UK issues HERE. One relating to US issues HERE.

The Surveillance State

A big question on the lips of many is this; do we live in a dystopian age? Are we watched over by a kind of ‘Big Brother’?
One of the key challenges to this idea of over-surveillance might be that is there actually an agenda, or are people just trying to keep each other safe? Could our technology and intellect be used for prosperity and freedom rather than control and suffocation?
